A Historic Wedding Venue and Event Space In North Portland, Oregon

From Past to Present

The historic Baker Building dates back to 1912 when it was built by the Baker family to serve as a silent movie theater, pharmacy, and community gathering space. Among historical wedding venues in Portland, few can claim such an authentic connection to the city's past. The building has been home to many community events throughout the years but was closed to the public in the 1980s—until now.

The Discount Center, which occupied a retail storefront, transitioned into Unique Furniture Gallery, serving the community from the 1980s until its closure in 2015. During the same period, the Baker Ballroom was utilized by the Assemblies of God church, hosting numerous services and events throughout the 80s and 90s. This unique combination of retail and community activities contributed to the vibrant tapestry of the local area, where each establishment played a significant role in the lives of residents.

Furthermore, the theater continued to be referenced in various advertising materials as late as 1922, indicating its continued presence and prominence in the community during that period.

A Century of Community

at the heart of

North Portland

Construction of The Baker Building in the spring and summer of 1911 marked a meaningful shift for Portland’s Humboldt neighborhood. Rising on the northwest corner of North Killingsworth and Albina Streets, the new two‑story brick structure established a commercial anchor at what soon became a bustling neighborhood crossroads. With its mix of retail storefronts and public gathering spaces, the Baker Building quickly became a hub of activity, drawing shoppers, neighbors, and visitors from across Portland during a period of rapid urban growth, expanding industry, and increasing commercial energy.

The Baker Building’s original owner, Edwin M. Baker, was a real estate speculator who moved to Portland around 1910 after operating several theaters in Astoria. His ties to the theater world connected him with People’s Amusement Company, which owned and operated sixteen theaters across Portland — including the Crystal Theater, one of the Baker Building’s anchor tenants when it opened in 1912. His wife, Ora C. Baker, was the center of an active social scene and frequently hosted readings, recitals, teas, and other gatherings.

When the building first opened in September 1911, it offered a lively mix of gathering spaces: a ground‑floor theater, an adjacent pharmacy complete with a full soda fountain, and an upstairs event hall that served as a community hub. Over the decades, both the businesses inside and the building’s appearance shifted alongside the changing Humboldt neighborhood. The early combination of theater and pharmacy eventually gave way to retail shops, including clothing stores and budget furniture outlets. The original pressed‑brick exterior and transom windows were later covered with blue paint, false facades, awnings, and oversized signage.

Thanks to restoration efforts that began in 2015, The Baker Building has once again reclaimed its original form, allowing its early‑1900s character to shine through while continuing to serve as a welcoming space for the community.

Among ballrooms in Portland, few can claim such deep roots in their neighborhood. From its opening as a silent movie theater and pharmacy to its current role as a celebration space, The Baker Building has been a gathering place for generations of Portlanders.

Thoughtfully Preserved Character

The multi-year restoration process honored the building's historic integrity while adding modern amenities. Every detail, from the pressed-brick exterior to the transom windows, was carefully uncovered and restored to reveal the building's original 1900s beauty.

Peninsula Park Connection

Located just a short walk from Peninsula Park's ornamental fountains, manicured rose gardens, and brick walkways, the historic Baker Building offers couples seeking historical wedding venues the perfect combination of indoor elegance and outdoor photo opportunities.
